E-type Jaguar

Kevin has always loved E-type Jaguars and he has worked on quite a few over the years, including his own.

Like many he turned to the dry, relatively rust-free environment of California to find a restoration project in the pure form of a 3.8 litre Series 1 fixed head coupe. It proved to be a very good body shell which, after a bit of restoration work by a trusted local craftsman panelbeater, came up looking spectacular in silver.

The interior trim was entrusted to another of the highly skilled professionals Kevin works with, while he concentrated on building a high performance motor as well as upgrading the suspension and brakes.

The finished product was a highly usable road car that could just as easily be taken onto the race track and Kevin enjoyed several outings with the car at Classic Motor racing Club meetings.

Like many love stories, the ending isn't always exactly the way we would like it and Kevin eventually had to part with the car and buy something slightly more practical for family duties.

Jaguar Mark II

Over the years Kevin and his team have worked on a number of Jaguar Mark II's, either maintaining, restoring and keeping them as sympathic to the era or making improvements such uprated brakes, suspension and power steering.

HWM Jaguar Longmore Special

This single seater racing car is based on the HWM Jaguar that was raced and hill climbed by Rivers Fletcher in the late 1950's and 1960's in England.

The car has a replica HWM chassis and fitted with an aluminium body. The chassis was build by Ferrum Engineering in Dunedin and the front suspension grafted in by Jim Bennett of Dunedin (Furi Holdings). Jim also designed & built the rear De Dion suspension and grafted in a Jaguar independent differential. He also designed and manufactured the braking system. The front alloy drums were cast in Dunedin and finished off by Ferrum Engineering.

The alloy body was formed in Invercargill by Barry Leitch's company with reshaping of the nose and bonnet by Cliff Bennett of Dunedin.

The car is fitted with a 3.4 Jaguar double overhead cam motor and develops 283 BHP @ 5,200 RPM. This motor was originally built by Brian Middlemass for jet boat racing. It was designed as an endurance motor for 3 hour events and never failed to finish an event.

The gearbox is a Moss box with the gear change between the drivers legs!

The car races on Aston Martin DB3 16 inch wheels and is fitted with 650/16 at the rear and 550/16 on the front. To alter the gearing 15 inch wheels are fitted to the rear.

The car has been maintained by Kevin Telford (Classic Automotive) since 1999. Since then it has raced at the Waimate Street Race, Ruapuna, Wigram, Levels, Teretonga, the Dunedin Street Race and Three Mile Hill Climb. Along with owner and regular driver the car has been raced by Kevin Telford, David Hunter, Kerran McNeil of Dunedin and Greg Mowat of Christchurch all friends of the late Barry Longmore.

The car was originally started as a project by Barry Longmore of Dunedin in the early 1990's. Barry was tragically killed in 1996 while travelling to Invercargill in his MK2 Jaguar. Although the car still required a considerable amount of work Barry's wife Fiona, wanted the car completed and raced. Although it took a further 3 years to complete the project its presence on the track is a fitting memory of her late husband.

The car is owned by Paul and Lisa Coghill.
